Enslaved to Time

(Best with sound on)

Manic as stretched hours
Mixed metaphors flow
outside the lines
Blurry beautiful bleeding watercolors

One messy mosaic an offspring of time makes
Constantly quantifying life with
arbitrary measurements
Post miles along a carefully grafted check list

Entangled in this tragic world
Unforgiving pendulum glides glacially through
the sands of fate
As we stand at the razor’s edge,
Suspended

Often one wills the aches away,
wishing for the shadowy dial to move, barely breathing
Yearning for control over Nature’s finite rules

Yet granted respite, Helio’s chariot races by uninvited
Just as we hope to savor rose-tinted Mays
Its already sunset

Soaring through the calendar, thin papers falling away
Blow out the candles
It’s time to look up at the horizon again
Forever failing to imprint such
precious golden hues

These unreachable pastures are evergreen
The ebbs and flows of time dictated
by the winds of human disposition

We are our eternal clock
Shackled to 1440-minute intervals

Our greatest resource, our fiercest foe,
Time will only go
While the heart reaches out to melody
Wishing for slowed momentum

Nature is a fickle unyielding constant
It was always our minds who were culprit to this desire
To quantify and capture what is not ours
Time shall not be indentured to whispered whims
Instead, we indenture ourselves by the fool’s yearning for forever
